Because the emphasis of the holiday is on being thankful, families focus on what “thankful” means to them. Each member of the family shares one thing that he or she is thankful for. Most of the time the answer changes from year to year based on events or stages in life. However, each person around the table realizes the extent of his or her gratitude.
Enjoying Dessert Together
Many families have to spread their time between multiple relatives and friends. It’s tough to keep up with each obligation and make sure each person gets the attention they deserve. Instead of trying to make dinner in each home, set aside one place to visit just for dessert. Look up a few Thanksgiving dessert recipes and bring along your own contribution. This way you can plan for this time in advance and you won’t feel rushed.
Inviting Someone New
Just about everyone knows somebody that doesn’t have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving. A coworker’s family is out-of-town for the holidays. A neighbor may have recently lost a spouse and is now home alone. Whatever the reason, there are people that end up missing out on the tradition of turkey, stuffing, and pie. Invite someone new over and share your family’s traditions with him or her. You may find this to be something that you want to continue each year.
