Kids are a blessing. They are also a game changer. If you were settled into a married routine for a while and then had kids come along then you know how the dynamics of your relationship shifted over night. All at once, the attention you were getting and giving has been refocused on those young ones. And you’d have to adjust your household and even install home security systems. Nothing wrong with that, but all that love and attention can be at the expense of your marriage. This is why it’s important for both couples to recognize how things have changed and take stock of how they can improve.
For the dads: If your wife has been in charge of the kids then she’s going to need a break. Don’t wait for a birthday or anniversary to surprise her with a day of pampering. In fact, sending her off on a spa day in the middle of the week for no reason is a perfect way to bring back the smiles. Your wife might have a hard time relaxing at first, but allowing her have some dedicated mommy time that is all about her is going to have some wonderful benefits for the whole family.
For the moms: Between the shopping, the carpools, the cooking and all the other business of keeping your family on track it’s easy to take your husband for granted or even to build up a bit of resentment. This is why you need to reclaim your relationship with a dedicated date night. There should be no pressure for date night. In fact, even taking a long ride for an ice cream cone is all you need to reconnect.
